Terms of the five-year supply agreement were not disclosed, but the companies have set a production target of 5,000 units a year. The cells will initially be HP Pavilion ZD8000 Battery produced at the supplier's facility in France but eventually be assembled in the United States.
"As we move toward greater electrification of vehicles, we can achieve much more by working together toward a common goal," said Sue Cischke, Ford's group vice president for sustainability, environment and safety engineering.
The lithium-ion battery system being designed by HP Pavilion DV1000 Battery Milwaukee-based Johnson Controls will include cells along with mechanical, electrical, electronic and thermal components.
Hybrids, including Toyota's top-selling Prius, offer better mileage than comparable gas-only cars by switching to an electric motor whenever possible.
Toyota leads the world's automakers in hybrids sold at about 1.5 million vehicles since the first mass-produced hybrid Prius came out about a HP Pavilion DV8000 Battery decade ago. The company now offers other models in a hybrid version.
